  A.R.I.S.E. Program
Riverbend Art Center presents a.r.i.s.e. (Artistic Resources in Social Empowerment), an artist-in-residence, after-school FREE program for youth ages 5 to 14, offered at Riverbend Art Center and the Dayton Cultural & RTA Center. Participants will see live performances by professional actors, learn drama and dance and perform in on-stage plays. They also learn airbrushing, beadart, computer art, drawing, jewelry making, lapidary, painting, pottery, sculpture and video production and exhibit what they create. The fall session of a.r.i.s.e. will begin Septermber 25 and last nine weeks. For more information call 333-7000.

Colored Pencil
Come and enjoy a class that explores the versatility of the colored pencil. From delicately soft to smooth or coarse, colored pencil achieves a broad range of interpretation through the use of mixing, blending and layering. This class will also emphasize sound composition and design principles in a relaxed and open atmosphere.

This is an instruction class that will explore the fundamentals of drawing using pencil and pen and ink. The student is encouraged to select subject matter that is of the most inspiration to them, and will be introduced to the transitional process of black and white to full color application.

Basic Wire Wrapping for Jewelry
Learn the basics of wire wrapping, the art of using wires as a solderless form of metal jewelry. Create sterling silver and gold-filled jewelry and ornaments, by themselves or in combination with crystal, beads and polished or faceted stones. The lab fee covers tools, which include flat nosed, round nosed and chain nosed pliers; diagonal cutters; pin vice and a polishing cloth. Students who already have tools do not have to pay a lab fee. You may purchase wire from the instructor. Intermediate and advanced students welcome.

Beginning and Advanced Metal Construction
and Stone Setting
New students will acquire basic silver construction techniques while making a pair of post-style earrings and bezel setting a stone in a ring they make from sterling silver sheet metal and wire. Students will then learn to set stones into their ring and a pre-made basket pendant. Advanced students can work on self directed projects with assistance from the instructor if they complete these projects. All jewelry pieces may not be completed during this nine-week session.

Lost Wax Casting
Create jewelry or small sculptural works using the lost wax casting process. The focus of the class is on techniques for working in wax to create a variety of forms and textures. The wax is then embedded in a plaster-like material, the wax burned away, and metal poured into the resulting void. Your imagination is the limit. Typical items are rings, pins and pendants in silver or gold. You will also have the opportunity to cast bronze pieces up to about 6" in size. Beginning through advanced students are welcome.

Jewelry Making with Metal Clay
Glass & Stone Setting
Come and see how much fun it is to design your own fine jewelry from Silver clay.  You will learn various methods and techniques for using 99% Fine Silver clay properly and economically.  Beginners will master texturing, slip soldering, setting gems that can fire in place, clean up, design, sculpting with clay and mold making.  This workshop will focus on making hollow beads, working with setting stones/fused glass and other techniques for more experienced students.  Learn which stones and glass work with the Silver Clay.  A $40.00 material fee will be payable to the instructor by the first class.  The fee includes 20 grams of Silver clay (value $34.00), use of silver clay syringe and silver slip, one dichroic glass and cabochon and stone for setting, use of tools, misc. supplies for firing and finishing.  Additional Silver clay and other material will be available for purchase.  Please bring magnifying glasses if needed to see small detail work.  This class will accept youth ages 12 and up.

  Glass Working
 
Lampwork Bead Making - Beginning This glass bead making technique uses a Hothead torch, MAPP gas and Moretti (soft) glass rods. The course will start with the basics and plenty of practice on producing well formed beads. Then one or two internal or external decorating techniques will be introduced at the start of each class followed by practice time. If you need help getting started or want to expand and refine your bead making skills, this class will help. Decorating techniques include basic and complex shaping, enamel powders, precious metal foils, imbedding gemstones, controlled air trapped bubbles, feathering, dots, making multicolor stringer, mica, baking soda, etc. A basic materials fee of $25.00 is due to instructor at the first class and each student needs to supply MAPP gas or purchase it from the instructor. The torch head will be provided. Ages 16 and up.

Stained Glass Window Workshop

Advanced Digital Camera I
 If you can adjust the apertures and shutter speeds on your camera, this course is for you.  Learn the basics of your camera’s exposure modes, flash modes, and photo composition.  We will explore the use of apertures and shutter speeds and their effects on Depth of Field control and Motion control (both stopping motion and giving the appearance of motion).  We will also examine those principles that constitute a good photograph, such as composition, formatting your subject and the basics of using light effectively.  There will also be shooting assignments to ensure your understanding of the lessons learned.

Advanced Digital Camera II
Learn the more advanced use of your camera in this class.  We will continue our exploration of exposure, including “Proper” exposure vs. “Correct” exposure, the “abbreviated” Zone System, metering techniques for digital cameras, etc.  We will also discuss proper lens selection including focal length, field-of-view, and lens perspective vs. viewing perspective.  Other topics include White Balance, Histograms and their interpretation, shooting in RAW vs. JPEG, and Photo Composition II.  Shooting assignments will also be given to ensure your understanding of these topics.

Beginning and Intermediate Head/Bust Sculpting
Working from photographs or researched material of selected subject, a small size head would be the focus of this session. By learning more about the head (facial bones and muscles) the student would work toward creating a more representational sculpture form.
